Para la tarde de hoy se debería haber realizado una reunión en el municipio de Haringey donde la comisión de planificación debería haber resuelto en torno a la aplicación de la constructora Grainger . Esta corporación quiere demoler el Pueblito Paisa para hacer departamentos que se vendan a más de £300,000 cada uno.

Sin embargo, tal ha sido la protesta de los vecinos de Tottenham y de la comunidad latina que esta conllevó a que el sábado 19 de julio se realizara la mayor protesta callejera en la historia reciente de dicho barrio. Cientos de personas hicieron una cadena humana alrededor de la manzana de 500 metros de diámetro que pretende ser demolida. Luego de ello y de que esta lucha haya sido pasada por varios medios (incluyendo el noticiero en la TV de la BBC) el alcalde de Londres Boris Johnson y el parlamentario del distrito David Lammy produjeron declaraciones muy críticas al proyecto que busca arrasar al mayor mercado latino de UK.

El nerviosismo de los opositores a la coalición comunitaria en defensa del edificio de Wards Corner (donde está el mercado de Seven Sisters y el Pueblito Paisa) hizo que en la madrugada del miércoles se vandalizara el letrero gigante que está a la entrada de dicha galería.

Este es un cartel privado por el cual se hizo una colecta de £560 para poner un aviso gigante donde se decía que tumbar este edificio destruiría a toda una comunidad. Los vándalos lo llenaron de papeles oscuros.

Sin embargo, los residentes de Tottenham y los comerciantes del Pueblito Paisa inmediatamente se pusieron las pilas. Se empezó a mover la maquinaria de prensa y de contactos de la coalición y de Minka News. A las pocas horas del suceso los principales medios de Tottenham ya tenían colocada en su web noticias sobre ese hecho y toda la prensa británica ya se había enterado de tal violación a las libertades. Inmediatamente después la comisión de planificación se vio obligada a cancelar dicha reunión.

Ello es una rotunda victoria no solo para la comunidad de Tottenham (una de las más multi-étnicas que hay) sino para el millón de latinos que viven en el Reino Unido.

La batalla no ha concluido pues la constructora Grainger no ha renunciado a su plan, pero se ha avanzado mucho. Ahora los vecinos de la zona y el Pueblito Paisa se lanzarán a una campaña de miles de firmas de apoyo y a nuevas actividades que pronto informaremos.

Los latinos en Elephant and Castle y otras zonas deben ver lo que allí está pasando como un ejemplo a seguir. Las lecciones son que para avanzar se requiere:

1) Aliarse con el resto de las comunidades.

2) Mantenerse unidos, fuertes y decididos.

3) Tener una buena red de prensa y contactos.

4) Saber utilizar la protesta, la ley y el diálogo.

5) Meterse en la política y saber maniobras entre las diversas fuerzas que hay.

MINKA viene cubriendo los hechos del Pueblito Paisa porque nos parece que es un ejemplo que debe seguir a toda la comunidad para ir avanzando.

El Carnaval del Pueblo deberá aprender de ello. Ante los recortes en sus becas y la amenaza de expulsar a miles de sus espectadores y artistas desde el 1’ de octubre ellos deberían responder haciendo ciertas formas de protesta para concitar el apoyo popular.

Well it must have rattled someone’s cage, because we came out this morning to find it had been greywashed:

So finally they are speaking to us. Sort of.

Speculation about the identity of the vandals was rife. As the billboard has been rented at no small expense by the WCC for two weeks, this is an act of criminal damage, so we need to find out who to sue.

We discovered later that the attack came from Transport for London, which owns the freehold of the Wards Corner site.

It was a proper professional job, not a man-with-van bit of flyposting. The grey paper is backed by blackout material:

La Batalla naval del Lago de Maracaibo referida también como Batalla naval del lago fue una batalla naval librada el 24 de julio de 1823 en las aguas del Lago de Maracaibo en el actual estado Zulia, Venezuela. La misma sellaría definitivamente la independencia venezolana de España siendo una acción decisiva en las campañas navales de la Independencia.


Batalla
En la Batalla naval del Lago se enfrentó la escuadra republicana dirigida por el Almirante José Prudencio Padilla, comandante del tercer departamento de Marina y de las operaciones sobre el Zulia y la realista mandada por el capitán de navío Ángel Laborde y Navarro, Comandante del apostadero de Puerto Cabello y segundo jefe de la armada española sobre Costa Firme. La escuadra patriota estaba compuesta por los bergantines: Independiente, Marte, Fama, Confianza y Gran Bolívar; las goletas: Espartana, Independencia, Manuela, Chitty, Emprendedora, Aventina, Peacock, Antonia Manuela y Leona. En cuanto a las fuerzas realistas las mismas estaban conformadas por el bergantín San Carlos, los bergantines-goletas: Esperanza y Riego o Maratón; la goleta de gavias Especuladora; las de velacho: María Salvadora, Estrella, Cora, Mariana, Rayo, María Habanera y Zulia; las flecheras: Atrevida y Maracaibera; los pailebotes: Guajira y Monserrat, los faluchos: Resistencia, Mercedes, Brillante, Relámpago y Pedrito y las piraguas: Raya, Duende, Palomera, Esperanza, Félix María, Altagracia, San Francisco y Corbeta, con un total de 49 cañones, 14 carronadas, 4 obuses, individuos de tropa y 670 de marinería, incluidos jefes y oficiales.

Luego de haber tenido 3 encuentros parciales con la escuadra española, la escuadra republicana se apostó en el puerto de Moporo, donde pasó la primera quincena de julio sin actividades de mayor importancia hasta el 17 de julio en que el comandante Labordex envió a Padilla una intimación que éste rechazó, por lo que los días subsiguientes transcurrieron en febril actividad bélica, en el que ambos comandantes se mantuvieron acondicionando sus buques, concentrando provisiones y adiestrando sus tripulaciones con miras al combate.

En la tarde del 23 de julio la escuadra realista se dirigió a la costa occidental del lago en las inmediaciones de Capitán Chico y fondeó entre este sitio y Bella Vista, al norte de Maracaibo, quedando en línea de combate, pero la republicana permaneció en la vela hasta el anochecer que fue a dar fondo en los Puertos de Altagracia, quedando todos los buques en una línea paralela a la costa oriental, avanzando las fuerzas sutiles hasta Punta de Piedra.

Al amanecer del 24 de julio los comandantes de los buques republicanos fueron llamados al bergantín Independiente, donde el Almirante Padilla les dio las últimas instrucciones para el combate, efectuando algunos cambios y no satisfecho aún, a las 10:30;, pasó personalmente a bordo de toda la escuadra, con el objeto de arengar a sus dotaciones y animarlas de un modo eficaz para que, llegado el momento de atacar a los realistas, lo hicieran con la mayor intrepidez y entusiasmo. A las 10:40 roló el viento al noroeste y 10 minutos después se hizo la señal de prepararse a dar la vela, pero habiendo aflojado llamándose al sur, se reservó la decisión de levar anclas hasta que se afirmase la brisa por donde fuera favorable, pese a que todo lo invitaba a atacar la escuadra realista que se hallaba fondeada a su frente en una línea paralela a la costa y muy próxima a ella.

A las 14:00, se ordenó al comandante de las fuerzas sutiles levar y seguir sobre las embarcaciones realistas de su clase, en atención a que por su menor andar debía adelantarse; a las 14:20, hicieron la señal de dar la vela, y minutos después la de formar la línea de frente para atacar al mismo tiempo a todos los buques enemigos que, observando aquellos movimientos que se acordaron. Como el bergantín Marte estaba situado a barlovento y el Independiente, a sotavento, fueron proporcionando el andar de modo que quedase y siguiese perfectamente bien formada la línea de batalla para lograr la ejecución del plan que Padilla se había propuesto, sin que por esto se dejasen de hacer las señales que fuesen menester a cada uno de los que se desviasen de su sitio.

Los buques republicanos avanzaron con rapidez sobre la escuadra realista que se mantuvo anclada en espera del ataque; el ala sur de la escuadra la llevaba el Almirante Padilla y el ala norte estaba a las órdenes del capitán de navío Nicolás Joly, cortando la retirada hacia la bahía. A las 15:04, colocaron la señalar de abordar al adversario dejándola izada no obstante haber sido contestada por todos los buques, para manifestar con ello que ninguna cosa restaba por hacer. A las 15:45, la flota realista abrió fuego sobre las escuadras patriotas, pero la escuadra de Colombia la Grande, prosiguió avanzando sin disparar un tiro; hasta que estando cerca rompieron los fuegos de cañón y fusilería. Al romperse los baupreses, el bergantín Independiente, se echó sobre el San Carlos, y se dio comienzo al abordaje, fase con la cual se decidió la victoria para los republicanos.

Como consecuencia del ataque patriota, fueron destruidos muchos buques realistas y capturados otros. Los realistas en la más angustiosa situación picaron los cables y trataron de escapar haciéndose a la vela; pero fracasaron en su intento, pues sus buques mayores fueron hechos prisioneros. La mayor parte de la tripulación del San Carlos se arrojó al agua e igual suerte corrió la de los otros buques, excepto la del bergantín-goleta Esperanza, que fue destruida por una explosión. En definitiva, sólo tres goletas lograron escapar y se pusieron al abrigo del castillo San Carlos.

Terminada la jornada el Almirante Padilla ordenó que la escuadra diese fondo allí donde había combatido. Poco después se dirigió a los Puertos de Altagracia a reparar las averías de sus naves. Por su parte, el comandante Ángel Laborde pasó al castillo, ganó luego la barra, tocó en Puerto Cabello y con el archivo del apostadero se dirigió a Cuba. Las pérdidas de los republicanos fueron de 8 oficiales y 36 individuos de tripulación y tropa muertos, 14 de los primeros y 150 de los segundos heridos y un oficial contuso, mientras que la de los realistas resultaron mayores, sin contar los 69 oficiales y 368 soldados y marineros que quedaron prisioneros. En 2 horas de recio combate se decidió la acción, la cual abrió camino a las negociaciones con el capitán general de Venezuela, quien, al concluirlas el 3 de agosto siguiente, se obligó a entregar el resto de los buques españoles, la plaza de Maracaibo, el Castillo de San Carlos, el de San Felipe en Puerto Cabello, así como todos los demás sitios que ocupaban los españoles y el día 5 evacuó definitivamente el territorio venezolano.

A billboard paid for by the community group hoping to save Wards Corner from developers has been sabotaged.

The campaign posters which cost £560, paid for by the Wards Corner Community Coalition (WCC), were intendend to run for a fortnight starting on July 17.

Its message, displayed on the Wards building next to Seven Sisters Tube station, reads: "If Haringey Council approves the plan to demolish these buildings, it would completely destroy a thriving local community."

But in the early hours of the morning, the posters were covered up and its message blocked out.

Lagu Sukumaran, who owns a business on West Green Road, said: "Whoever did this must have done so early this morning because the glue is still wet. It was definitely a professional job because the message was not just painted over but completely postered over."

The coalition are planning to report the incident to the police and request that CCTV footage is looked at in a bid to identify the culprits.

Council planning officers are expected to make a decision on an application submitted by Grainger, a property development company this Thursday.

Grainger’s plans to bulldoze the site to make way for luxury flats and a high-end shopping arcade would force the closure of the Latin American market.

The WCC have run a long campaign against the proposals.

Roy Jose, a member of the WCC, said: "Whoever did this does not want us to get our message across. The extent of the sabotage just shows that someone out there is really rattled by what we are saying.

"But their attempts to silence our message has worked in our favour because now everybody can see they are worried."

Several members of the community coalition had reported seeing David Walters, development director at Grainger’s, staring at the sign and talking on his mobile yesterday.

A spokesman for the company said: "Grainger did not remove the poster.

"To do so would be illegal and the company does not have that kind of jurisdiction. Any rumours that suggest otherwise are completely unfounded."

LONDON Mayor Boris Johnson has joined the battle over the future of Wards Corner - branding plans to demolish it and evict a thriving Latin market "unacceptable".

He has waded into the tug of war between developers Grainger and residents over the site's future and demanded Haringey Council throw out Grainger's planning scheme.

His intervention follows a human-chain protest on Saturday, believed to be the largest demonstration in Tottenham for decades, where 500 people joined hands to surround the former Wards building above Seven Sisters Tube station.

Mr Johnson appealed to Haringey Council to stop demolition and save the Latin market, Pueblito Paisa, home to 60 market stalls and 11 businesses.

He said: "This much-loved market is vitally important to the Latin American community and home to many local traders. The proposed re-development of Wards Corner would pull down the market and only offer space to a handful of people, which is unacceptable." He called for the council to "urgently review this proposal".

The Grainger planning application is due to be heard by the council tonight (Thursday).

If approved it could result in the former Wards department store being demolished to be replaced by gated luxury flats and traders in the Latin market losing their livelihoods and homes.

But opposition from the community is likely to be fierce.

The Wards Corner Community Coalition (WCC), a group of residents and traders who have lodged an alternative planning application for the site, are due to protest with 300 people outside the meeting at 6.15pm.

Lagu Sukumarn, owner of Fair Deal Cash and Carry, West Green Road and WCC member, said: "We are not pausing or stopping until we get concrete evidence that this scheme has been stopped."

Tottenham MP David Lammy, who has met separately with the WCC and Grainger, called for all sides to work together on "meaningful regeneration" but said there was a need to "pause and take stock".

He said: "During the course of recent weeks it has become clear to me that the current plans about to go before the planning committee do not have a breadth of community support necessary to go forward."

He added: "We cannot allow this opportunity for regeneration to be lost for another generation."

A spokeswoman for the council said: "The council has received a planning application for the site which will be considered by the planning committee in the normal way."

WCC members were also furious that a huge £560 billboard poster placed outside Wards Corner had been "grey-washed" over on Wednesday morning.

Billboard defending 7 Sisters market against demolition has been vandalised

On Saturday 19 July more than 500 local residents circled the entire Seven Sisters market block. According to the Tottenham resident association it was the largest demonstration that had happened in the area for many years. Tottenham is considered as one of the world’s most diverse multi-ethnic districts and people from tens of nations and all faiths (Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhist, Hindus, etc.) participated in the human chain.

Sheik Thompson, former Haringey Mayor, as well as many important figures, participated in such event.

The following day (20 July) a massive Colombian festival in South Bank applauded the struggle of Seven Sisters market and hundreds of signatures were collected in support of it. Also David Lammy, the local MP, wrote a statement criticising the Grainger’s plan that is trying to demolish UK’s largest Latin American market and Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, have been given a public statement in support of the market.

As part of the campaign the Wards Corner Community Coalition (WCC) paid £560 for putting a big billboard at the entrance of the building that Garinger is trying to destroy in order to make luxury flats.

Unfortunately, some hours ago the billboard have been covered up with grey and black papers. This is a criminal offense and the police are being investigating.

Tomorrow the WCC is going to restore the billboard. In the meantime many of their members have been putting a lot of A3 posters in such place saying ‘Demolish buildings wreck communities’, ‘What next?’.

All of this happens just before a very important meeting which is going to happen tomorrow.

We invite all people to be at 6:00 pm at the Civic Centre (Wood Green, London N22 8LE) to defend the local community. At that time the London Borough of Haringey Planning Committee is going to take a decision.

What is the Wards Corner Community Coalition?

Wards Corner is a 1902-1908 building at the junction of Seven Sisters Road and Tottenham High Road, N15 5BT. The WCC came together to block a development by Graingers, which plans to demolish the Edwardian buildings and those in three adjacent streets, and build 8 storey blocks of flats and retail space for chain stores and a national supermarket. We quickly realized how we wanted to improve the area and build on the vibrant and multi-cultural character of Seven Sisters.The process of developing an alternative plan has brought the communities together and we have become inspired by the sheer skills and knowledge possessed by our local community.

I am appealing to Haringey Council to stop the proposed demolition of the celebrated Pueblito Paisa market in Seven Sisters. This much loved market is vitally important to the Latin American community and home to many local traders. I was impressed by the magnificent range of products and services on offer when I visited the market earlier this year.

The proposed re-development of Ward’s Corner would pull down the market and only offer space to a handful of people, which is unacceptable. I want the Council to urgently review this proposal and put the livelihood of the traders and the thousands of locals who rely on this market at the core of their decision.

I want to express my deep condolences to the family of Jean Charles de Menezes who tragically died three years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with Jean Charles’ family today.

On the future of Ward's Corner

During the last few weeks, David Lammy has met separately with the Ward’s Corner Community Coalition and Grainger Ltd about their plans to redevelop the Ward’s Corner site.

After these meetings and the human chain on Saturday, David said:

“For the past decade, the Ward’s Corner site has been a blight on the landscape of Seven Sisters. What should have been the gateway to Tottenham has been ignored, and has become a great wasted opportunity to create something wonderful for local people.

“I have long been calling for meaningful regeneration in the area and had hoped that we were finally getting to place where this could start, delivering the jobs, businesses, shops, homes and community facilities for local people we all want to see.

“However, during the course of recent weeks it has become clear to me that the current plans about to go before the planning committee do not have a breadth of community support necessary to go forward.

“Whether this lack of support is due the poor of quality consultation or deficient dialogue between the parties concerned, I will leave open – I do not think it useful at this stage to enter into finger pointing. But we are now at a stage where the disquiet from a large group of local businesses including the Latin American Market and residents is so great that we should pause and take stock.

“Both groups have a vision for regenerating Ward’s Corner, and over the past year months I have received information from both sides and taken part in a dialogue on their proposals.

“During discussions with Grainger I pushed for a better mix of shops, quality design and a true community use – since these discussions their plans have substantially improved. They now include a multi-use community youth facility, higher quality design and better developed public art elements.

“Yet, in my discussions on Friday with the Community Coalition it was clear to me that they were still a long way from agreeing a way forward. The passion with which the Coalition argued their case was infectious – pushing the heritage, trader and community case particularly forcefully - and it is clear they are running an excellent campaign.

“I still want to see meaningful regeneration, but not at the expense of community cohesion and damage to local businesses. I am still uncertain that the Community Plan stacks up financially and delivers the necessary improvements to the area we need.

“However, I have said that I am happy to work with the Coalition on questions of funding and advice – but also made it clear we cannot wait forever to see action on this site.

“The Coalition also asked me about mediation, and I said I was happy to call for dialogue and outside mediation if necessary on the two plans. All parties must now work together to achieve a viable and popular scheme, that stacks up financially and delivers for the people of Tottenham.

“So I call on all sides to work together to delivery meaningful regeneration on this site, while taking with them the broadest support possible from the community. No one should be left out of these discussions, but we must not, however, lose this opportunity to deliver for Tottenham a project of which we can all be proud.

“Haringey Council urgently needs to consider the call for mediation to explore whether it is possible to bridge the gap between the plans and vision for the site.

“My worry is that we will reach a stalemate, putting at risk any future plans for the site – continuing the uncertainty for local business and residents. We cannot allow this opportunity for regeneration to be lost for another generation.

The mayor of London has called on Haringey Council to reject a planning application that would lead to the demolition of Seven Sisters market.

During his campaign Boris Johnson spent time visiting the market and pledged to save the area known as Wards Corner from developers if he was elected.

Now with proposals put forward by Grainger expected to go under the microscope at a planning meeting this Thursday, the mayor has urged the council to preserve the livelihoods of the traders.

Mr Johnson said: "The proposed redevelopment of Ward’s Corner would pull down the market and only offer space to a handful of people, which is unacceptable.

"I want Haringey Council to urgently review this proposal and put the livelihood of the traders and the thousands of locals who rely on this market at the core of their decision."

The site which takes its name from the Wards building, a former Edwardian department store, is home to more than 70 Latin American market traders and is one of the biggest cultural hubs for their community.

Under Grainger’s plans the site would be bulldozed and replaced with luxury flats and high street stores such as Marks & Spencer and Woolworths putting smaller businesses in West Green Road in jeopardy.

Following protests from a coalition of community groups, Wards Corner Community, the private development company amended their original design to include shop units for up to 13 small businesses but the rest of the traders would still have to find alternative premises.

Tottenham MP, David Lammy, who met with the Ward’s Corner Community Coalition and Grainger this week, expressed his own reservations about the plan.

He said: "I have long been calling for meaningful regeneration in the area and had hoped that we were finally getting to place where this could start. But it has become clear to me that the plans about to go before the planning committee do not have the breadth of community support necessary to go forward.

"Haringey Council urgently needs to consider the call for mediation to explore whether it is possible to bridge the gap between the plans and vision for the site."

A council spokesman said: "The council has received a planning application for the site which will be considered by our planning committee in the normal way."

The Mayor of London has launched an attack on a Grainger regeneration scheme in north London.

Boris Johnson called for Haringey Council to "urgently review" plans for the redevelopment of Ward’s Corner, drawn up by Grainger and architect Pollard Thomas Edwards. Johnson’s criticisms centre on the planned closure of the Latin American market known as Pueblito Paisa in Seven Sisters.


He said: “The proposed re-development of Ward’s Corner would pull down the market and only offer space to a handful of people, which is unacceptable. I want the council to urgently review this proposal and put the livelihood of the traders and the thousands of locals who rely on this market at the core of their decision.”

Grainger’s plans, currently on display in Tottenham, would involve a new public square, an upmarket shopping district and 197 new homes built on the site. The scheme went to planning on 5 February this year, and a decision is expected on Thursday.

According to the New Economics Foundation this East End stre et market is unique in being London’s most ethnically diverse. Sadly, it is now threatened by a developer intent on build vast tower blocks on the site.

‘The diversity is remarkable enough, but maybe even more remarkable are the prices – everything is eye-wateringly cheap. Asda’s Price Promise would be laughed at here. In an area like this, with so many people living on very low incomes, this is not just convenient, it is vital.’

The human dynamic of the market and its environs energises and reinforces cultural identity for people, many of whom feel marginalised and lost in London. With over 85% of the shoppers coming from African, African-Caribbean and Asian communities it is evident that the style of shopping is redolent of that found in the markets of Karachi, Kingston and Kumasi.

All who care about access to culturally appropriate food would do well to visit the market before it is too late.

Los latinos de UK celebran la liberación del que fuera el bastión hispano en Sudamérica

Durante varias ediciones hemos dado prioridad a la fiesta patria colombiana del 20 de Julio y ahora la fiesta nacional latinoamericana que se viene es la de Perú, cuyos 187 cumpleaños se celebra el 28 de julio. Después vienen las fiestas nacionales de Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, América Central y México, a las cuales les dedicaremos especiales.
El Perú fue el último bastión del dominio español en Sudamérica, por lo que sellar su independencia consumó la liberación del resto. El Perú, además, llegó a ser el nombre de todo el dominio hispano en el continente. Más adelante los libertadores quisieron bautizar a toda la región liberada con el nombre de Colón, o sea Colombia, en honor al descubridor del nuevo hemisferio. Hoy a esa patria grande ya no le llamamos Perú o Colombia sino América Latina.
La independencia del Perú fue, además, peleada por soldados de todas las naciones. Si bien la primera expedición de San Martín llegó a Lima proveniente de Chile y trayendo tropas de ese país, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay y otras latitudes, la expulsión definitiva de los conquistadores se dio con la llegada de Simón Bolívar y de sus tropas que provenían de Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Panamá y América Central. Todos esos movimientos, a su vez, fueron inicialmente alentados por Haití, la primera república negra y latinoamericana en haberse independizado.
El apoyo del Reino Unido fue importante. En Londres vivieron Miranda, Bolívar y O’ Higgins y en esta urbe murió Juan Pablo Viscardo y Guzmán en 1798, el peruano que aquí escribió el manifiesto de la independencia de toda América Hispana.
En UK hay unos 20,000 peruanos, pero, ellos son, en parte, el centro de la inmigración latinoamericana, pues más del 95% de ella proviene de dicha tierra y de sus cinco países circundantes (Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia y Chile).
En UK viven dos de los principales futbolistas peruanos (Solano y Pizarro) y también tienen aquí casas el mayor literato peruano vivo (Vargas Llosa) y el fotógrafo peruano más renombrado (Testino). En Londres vivió el mayor arqueólogo peruano y andino (Julio C Tello). Por último en esta ciudad aún tiene presencia el peruano que aparece en más páginas webs en inglés. ¿Saben quién es? No es Vargas Llosa, García, Fujimori o Toledo sino … el osito Paddington. El el único ‘peruano’ con una estatua en Inglaterra y quien pudo haber sido el rival ‘sudamericano’ del Mickey Mouse ‘norteamericano’.
Un saludo muy especial a todos los peruanos en el mundo y en especial a los del Reino Unido, incluyendo, como no, a las decenas de miles de colombianos, ecuatorianos, brasileros, bolivianos, mesoamericanos y chilenos de UK que siempre socializan con los peruanos y que comparten con ellos su rica cultura y comidas.
Otro saludo muy especial a las decenas de miles de británicos que se identifican con Perú. A nivel de América Latina el Perú es hoy es el segundo mayor exportador al Reino Unido y el mayor receptor de turistas británicos. Por doquier se hacen en toda UK eventos con músicos peruanos y ya hay más de cien granjas de auquénidos esparcidos por toda esta isla.
Una invitación a todos nuestros lectores a participar en las fiestas peruanas. No solo queremos que en ellas venga gente de la tierra del señor de Sipán sino también iberoamericanos de todas partes.

Estimados Compatriotas:
Nuevamente se aproximan las Fiestas Patrias y nuestros sentimientos de nacionalidad afloran de manera especial, sobre todo en aquellos que vivimos lejos del Perú.
En lo personal, el año que he vivido en Londres ocupando este puesto ha sido una experiencia muy especial, pues me ha permitido tomar contacto con una colonia peruana vibrante e íntimamente comprometida con los valores de la Peruanidad. Agradezco el apoyo de todos ustedes y les renuevo la completa vocación de servicio de esta oficina consular y la mía en particular.
Con motivo del Aniversario Nacional, el Consulado General ha organizado –como es costumbre-una Misa de Acción de Gracias que tendrá lugar el viernes 25 de Julio a las 7 pm. en el Bromptom Oratory. Desde 1986 siempre la comunidad peruana de Irlanda festeja el 28 de julio. Helen O' Connor, su eterna organizadora, nos cuenta que solo la comunidad peruana celebra su fiesta nacional, pues las otras colonias latinas no lo hacen o lo realizan en las pocas embajadas americanas que hay en Irlanda.

En la entrevista que tuvimos con Helen, ella nos informa que el local donde se congregan es un importante centro educativo de la capital y que en ese recinto se congregan usualmente entre 60 y 100 peruanos, irlandeses, chilenos, mexicanos y nacionales de distintos lugares para festejar al PERU. Todos ellos traen sus respectivos platos, cantan y hacen rifas.

Un saludo a los latinos de la tierra de los padres de O' Higgins, libertador de CHILE y del PERU.
